Superheroes: What Makes a Good Suit/Costume?

What Makes a Good Superhero Costume?

To create your very own good and practical superhero costume, you must first understand the fundamentals.

The main things you'll pay attention to in creating are:

What are their powers?

What are they trying to
represent/symbolize

Analyzing
Baymax (Big Hero 6)

In the movie, Baymax had two suit designs.

In the first picture, we see him with a more roundish figure and teal-colored plates.
While on the other hand, his newer design is more aerodynamic and has a more vibrant color scheme.

In the first picture, Baymax could barely move; he's very stiff in that suit. In the latter, he is able to be more flexible which accommodates his large figure.

Hiro (the sole purpose he was created for) is his kid whom he needs to keep out of danger's grasp. He's a smart kiddo who learns from his mistakes (he made both suits) Baymax in the second picture has the ability to fly, and detach his arm to mimic a missle (arm canon) as well as sturdier material for his overall armor.

In "Big Hero 6", the good guys lineup aren't "super" heroes per se but are actually tech nerds who want to help society by using their skills to the fullest and understanding in the field of study.

Why Teal? Why Red?

Once we see Baymax he's immediately introduced as a caretaker robot for Hiro from his older brother, Tadashi. But as the adventure progressed, Hiro instead wanted Baymax to be more like a war machine. A fierce, strong, wall of pride, not the soft, caring, and soft-hearted Baymax who was created by Tadashi.

Baymax is white, a color associated with purity, simplicity, cleanliness, peace, innocence, and humility. In other words, extremely appropriate for Baymax’s character.

For many people, teal symbolizes decency and renovation. A shy color, it's composed of shades of blue and green. Its reserved nature promotes clarity, open communication, and practical thinking. Not too evocative, teal is helpful for applications designed for stress relief.

Since red is the color of blood, it has historically been associated with sacrifice, danger, and courage.. Baymax In his superhero form, he wears bright red, which is associated with power and strength and is sometimes used as a heroic color. However, red can also be associated with rage and evil, which is illustrated clearly when Baymax loses his healthcare chip and attacks the villain. His suit also has a little purple, which corresponds to Hiro’s suit (which also has a little bit of red).

Analyzing
Parr Family (The Incredibles)

Mr. Incredible (Bob Parr)

Mr. Incredible’s suit is designed for durability and strength, reflecting his superhuman abilities. The vibrant red color symbolizes his heroic persona, while the black accents enhance his muscular build. The suit is made from a resilient material that can withstand intense physical impact, allowing him to protect others effectively. His emblem, a stylized “I,” represents his role as a superhero and his commitment to saving the day.

Elastigirl (Helen Parr)

Elastigirl’s suit is both flexible and functional, mirroring her incredible elasticity. The sleek design allows for a full range of motion, essential for her acrobatic abilities. The black and red color scheme complements her character, emphasizing agility and style. Her suit also features reinforced areas to protect her during high-stakes missions, showcasing her dual role as a mother and a superhero.

Violet Parr

Violet’s suit highlights her unique powers of invisibility and force fields. The darker hues of her suit reflect her more reserved personality, while the sleek design allows her to move stealthily. The suit is tailored to enhance her ability to create force fields, providing her with both protection and versatility in combat situations. The subtle “I” emblem connects her to her family’s legacy of heroism.

Dash Parr

Dash’s suit embodies speed and energy, perfectly suited for his superhuman velocity. The bright red color and streamlined design minimize air resistance, enabling him to run at incredible speeds. The suit is lightweight and comfortable, allowing for agility and quick movements. His youthful energy is reflected in the vibrant colors, making him stand out as the fast and fearless member of the family.

Jack-Jack Parr

Jack-Jack’s suit is designed for adaptability, reflecting his unpredictable array of powers. While his suit may appear simple, it is engineered to accommodate his rapid transformations and evolving abilities. The colorful patterns symbolize his playful nature and potential. This versatile design ensures he’s ready for any situation, embodying the surprise and excitement that comes with being the youngest member of the Incredibles family.
